Ward-Prowse. Yes please.

If we played 433 then Ward-Prowse wouldn't need to get in ahead of Paqueta. He could take Soucek's place and Rice be replaced by another DM. No idea how good a captain he is but he'd make a massive difference to how many set piece goals we scored.

Not saying we should buy Maguire, btw, as he needs to rebuild his confidence after a poor season. Just that his captaincy and leadership put him among a small group this summer.
JWP might be the better option, but is wanted by clubs likely to qualify for Europe.

An alternative captaincy option would be Ward-Prowse, who will surely leave Southampton after relegation.
By all accounts, he’s a good leader surrounded by a lack of quality. Some claim he’s a mini Noble figure. But would he get in a side ahead of Paqueta?
Not a lot of natural leaders out there, unless we went abroad.

I think Maguire’s a better player than people give him credit for - he’s become one of the whipping boys at Man Utd because, under ETH, he’s a square peg in a round hole. And at a club that can’t keep pace with Man City and Arsenal.
Zouma suffered a similar rep at Chelsea towards the end, and has been a good signing for us. It’s about expectations etc, too.
That said, I agree: only buy Maguire if his price is around £30m. Anything more would be overpriced for a 30-year-old who’s had a poor season.

Does not make sense spending a lot of money on buying Maguire and paying his wages when there are players available, who are as bad as him, for much much less of an outlay.

Maguire would be a disaster. Wrong side of 30, massive wages, not to mention he's been absolute shit for Man Utd.
I'd be all over JWP, even if we somehow managed to keep Rice.

Fucking hope we're not in for Harry Ricket Maguire?

Were he still here I would have suggested Dawson as a captain in the short term.
Pity he left and I’m sure his weekly contributions are one of the reasons Wolves are pulling clear of relegation.
Sans Rice next season Bowen would be my choice as on field skipper.

Nobody's going to spend even close to £40m on a CB who's been out of form for yonks and will turn 31 next season.

I wouldn't be keen on spending £40m of the rice money on maguire, and I'm sure they'd want back at least half the fee they spent on him

Re: Skip Post Declan

One of the many problems we’ve had this season has been the lack of natural leadership behind Rice, and since Noble’s retirement.
Big difference between being a good and experienced pro, like Ogbonna, and being a leader. Oggy’s too quiet around the place to be the captain (and may well leave this summer anyway).
Could definitely see us in for Maguire in the summer, especially if Moyes stays. Other sides will be, too, like Villa and Newcastle. Dec’s not been Noble-like with the captaincy, but he has no natural replacement.

Re: Skip Post Declan

It’s possible we’ll buy our next captain using the cash we will most likely receive for Rice this summer.
There’s no obvious internal candidate. As some have suggested, the most likely internals are Zouma and Aguerd, and neither quite fit the bill.
With that in mind, I’d expect the summer transfer strategy to include bringing in somebody with captaincy experience, which might also act as an appeal to a “big”-ish name.
Rightly or wrongly, keep an eye on Maguire, Ward-Prowse etc.

Yeah, I agree, think there's definitely a French clique going on, which isn't ideal. Hopefully we'll get someone new in who can be a good captain.

I wouldn't have any member of the french clique as the captain (I know Benrahma isn't french, but there does seem to be a bit of a clique amongst the french speakers in the squad).

Not sure if it's just because he's a mate, but what Benrahma said about Zouma sounds like the sort of thing you'd want from a captain:
“He’s a guy who, every day, pushes me. He encourages me, he gives me strength. He’s always telling me what I’m capable of. He encourages me just by talking, he boosts my morale. I’ve gone through some difficult moments but thankfully he’s always been there.”

Didn't someone say a while ago that Zouma is too much of a clown around the training ground and the dressing room to be considered captain material?

Cresswell, Ogbonna and Antonio are the last of the Boleyn Boys, so I feel they are my choice for captaincy, but none of them will be hear much longer, at least not as regular starters.
I hope Cresswell has at least one more good season, as it will be his testimonial season.
Oggie would be the best captain out of those three, I feel, but how much longer has he got?
